‘Alert nipped near Cape Beechey, Robeson Channel’, woodburytype from an 1876 photograph by Thomas Mitchell or George White (active 1870s), British naval officers. The landscape shows HMS Alert temporarily trapped by pack ice, lifting the entire vessel by three feet. The event took place in the Robeson Channel, the northernmost part of the Nares Strait between Ellesmere Island, Canada and Greenland. Alert and Discovery were the Royal Navy vessels employed on the British Arctic Expedition 1875–76 commanded by Sir George Strong Nares FRS.
